At Eddie McDougall Wines, we connect consumers and wine enthusiasts with premium wines from some of Australia’s top vineyards and renowned regions. Many of our wines are gathered from Margaret River and King Valley, known as Australia’s top locations for high quality wines.
Located between Wangaratta and the Alpine National Park in north east Victoria, King Valley has a cool and alpine climate. With clay loam and granite soil, the valley has been used since the 1880s to grow a variety of crops. Following the end of WWII, Italian, Yugoslav and Spanish migrants settled in the area, originally growing tobacco. Following a decline in the tobacco industry, vineyards were established. Known as Australia's home of Italian varieties, King Valley has the highest concentration of Italian wines outside of Italy. King Valley is known for its Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Barbera amongst others.
Margaret River contributes to only 3% of Australia’s total wine production, however 20% of Australia’s premium wines are made here. The most common varieties from Margaret River include Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Merlot. Gravelly and gritty, Margaret River soil is highly permeable and moisture is shed quickly due to sloping. Surrounded by ocean on three sides, Margaret River features a Mediterranean style climate. With ideal humidity and soil, Margaret River produces high quality wines that exceed expectations.
Stretching 240km from the Spanish boarder in the west, along the Mediterranean coast and towards the Rhone river and Provence in the east, the region experiences dry peak growing seasons with the majoirty of annual rainfall occuring in the winter. The plains area of Languedoc are the most arid and hottest in France. The region's soil composition consists of chalk, limestone and gravel based soils inland to more alluvial soils near the coast. Combined with a Mediterranean climate, Languedoc grows a huge range of grape varietals. Thus, blends are more typical of the area instead of single varietal wines.
