Located between Wangaratta and the Alpine National Park in north east Victoria, King Valley has a cool and alpine climate. With clay loam and granite soil, the valley has been used since the 1880s to grow a variety of crops. Following the end of WWII, Italian, Yugoslav and Spanish migrants settled in the area, originally growing tobacco. Following a decline in the tobacco industry, vineyards were established. Known as Australia's home of Italian varieties, King Valley has the highest concentration of Italian wines outside of Italy. King Valley is known for its Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Barbera amongst others.
Margaret River contributes to only 3% of Australia’s total wine production, however 20% of Australia’s premium wines are made here. The most common varieties from Margaret River include Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Merlot. Gravelly and gritty, Margaret River soil is highly permeable and moisture is shed quickly due to sloping. Surrounded by ocean on three sides, Margaret River features a Mediterranean style climate. With ideal humidity and soil, Margaret River produces high quality wines that exceed expectations.
